COVID-19 Deadline Extensions - United Concordia

New Rule Extends Member Deadlines

COVID-19 Deadlines Extension

Under a new rule issued on April 28 by the Employee Benefits Security Administration, Department of Labor, Internal Revenue Service and Department of the Treasury, key deadlines are being extended during COVID-19 for the majority of United Concordia Dental members aiming to minimize the possibility of members losing benefits due to pre-established deadline timeframes.

This rule provides members extra time to comply with certain deadlines affecting:

  • Special enrollment (qualifying life event) requests
  • COBRA continuation coverage and premium payment
  • Filing claims
  • Appeals of denied claims
  • External reviews of claim determinations

Deadline extensions apply to the COVID-19 "outbreak period," which started March 1 and continue for 60 days after the COVID-19 national emergency ends. Therefore, the outbreak period will not count against the member when calculating deadlines extended by the rule.

These extensions apply to health plans governed by the Employment Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) or the Public Health Services Act (non-federal government plans).
